Windows 11 Pro or Home — which version do you need

If you are choosing between Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro, the difference in price is small, but the difference in features matters only to some people. In this article you will see exactly what you get in addition with Pro and when it is genuinely worth it.
The short answer
- Home — if the computer is for the home: internet, documents, photos, video, games.
- Pro — if you work from the computer, connect to it remotely, encrypt the drive or the machine joins a company network.
Both versions receive the same security updates from Microsoft and equally good performance. Pro is not a 'faster' Windows — it is Windows with more administrative tools.
What Pro adds
BitLocker — full disk encryption
The most important difference for most people. BitLocker encrypts the contents of the drive, so if the laptop is stolen or lost, the data remains unreadable without your password. Home offers only limited 'device encryption' on certain models. If you carry work documents, accounting records or clients' personal data, this alone justifies Pro.
Remote Desktop — including accepting connections
Home can connect to another computer, but cannot accept connections. Pro can do both. If you want to reach your home or work computer from outside, you need Pro on the machine you are connecting to.
Hyper-V — virtual machines without extra software
Lets you run a second operating system in a window — for testing, for old software, for programming. It is missing in Home.
Windows Sandbox
An isolated temporary environment in which you can run an unknown file without risking the main system. You close it and everything disappears. Very useful if you download programs often.
Domain join and Group Policy
Essential if the computer has to join a company network with Active Directory or be managed centrally. Home cannot.
Control over updates
Pro lets you defer feature updates — useful when you do not want a new version right in the middle of a busy period.
What is the same
Microsoft Defender, Windows Hello, Snap Layouts, the widgets, Microsoft Store, gaming support, DirectX 12 — all of this is in Home too. If you need none of the features above, Home will do the same job for you.
Can you upgrade later
Yes. If you take Home now and need Pro later on, the upgrade is done with a new Pro key through Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. There is no need to reinstall and you do not lose your files.
Hardware requirements
Both versions require TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of free space. If you are not sure whether your computer meets them, see how to check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. On an older machine the more sensible choice is Windows 10 Pro.
