Как да проверите дали Windows е оригинален и активиран

How to check whether Windows is genuine and activated

‘Activated’ and ‘genuine’ are not the same thing. A computer may say that Windows is activated while behind that sits a KMS activator renewing a fake activation every 180 days. Here is how to check what is really on the machine.

Check 1: the activation status

Open Settings → System → Activation. Look for a line saying that Windows is activated. If it says ‘Windows is not activated’ or there is a warning, the licence has not been applied.

A quicker option: press Win + R, type slmgr /xpr and press Enter. The little window tells you whether the machine is permanently activated.

Check 2: the licence type and channel

This is where the truth shows. Win + Rslmgr /dlv → Enter. Pay attention to:

  • Description — it contains the channel: RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT / KMS_CLIENT channel.
  • Partial Product Key — the last 5 characters of the key.
  • License Status — it should be Licensed.

If you see KMS_CLIENT on a home computer that is not part of a company network with a KMS server, it is almost certainly an illegal activator. Such an activation expires and has to be ‘renewed’, and the tool that maintains it runs with administrator rights and often comes with unwanted baggage — see what a KMS activator is and why it is risky.

Check 3: Retail or OEM

This matters when you are thinking of changing the computer or the motherboard:

  • RETAIL — transferable to another machine, if you remove it from the old one.
  • OEM — tied to the motherboard it was originally activated on.

The differences are explained in OEM, Retail or Volume — what is the difference.

Check 4: the key embedded in the motherboard

Many pre-built computers and laptops have a key written into the UEFI. You can check it from the command line (as administrator):

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

If a key appears, the machine has a genuine OEM licence from the manufacturer and Windows will activate by itself after reinstalling the same edition.

If Windows suddenly deactivates

The most common reason is a hardware change — usually the motherboard. Steps:

  1. Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot.
  2. If the key was linked to a Microsoft account, choose ‘I changed hardware on this device recently’ and follow the wizard.
  3. With a Retail key you can simply enter it again: Change product key.

If a specific error code appears, the meanings and the solutions are collected in the article on activation errors.

And if the licence turns out not to be clean

It is not a disaster — you simply replace the activation with a valid key. Uninstall the activator (if there is one), run a full scan with Microsoft Defender and enter a new key through Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. No reinstallation is needed and you do not lose your files.

Genuine Retail licences with an invoice and a 2-year guarantee: Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Home, Windows 10 Pro. If you are not sure what slmgr /dlv shows on your machine, send us a photo of the screen at info@litsenzi.bg — we will tell you what it means.
