Office will not activate after a motherboard or computer change

You have replaced the motherboard, bought a new computer or carried out a larger upgrade — and Office (often Windows too) suddenly asks to be activated again. This is normal behaviour, not a fault. Whether you get your licence back depends entirely on the type of licence you have.
Why it happens
During activation Microsoft records a hardware „fingerprint“ — processor, motherboard, drives. The motherboard carries the most weight in that calculation. Once you replace it, the fingerprint no longer matches and the licence is flagged as being used on a different machine.
Retail or OEM — that decides everything

How to check which licence you have
For Windows: press Win + R, type slmgr /dlv and press Enter. On the Description line you will see RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT. The full procedure is in how to check whether Windows is genuine.
For Office: open Word → File → Account. If the licence is recorded in a Microsoft account, you will see which email address it is linked to.
If you have a Retail licence — the steps
Windows
- Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot.
- If the key was linked to a Microsoft account, choose „I changed hardware on this device recently“ and follow the wizard.
- If that does not work, enter the key again via Change product key.
Office
- Open Word → File → Account → Change product key.
- Enter the same 25-character code.
- If online activation is refused, use activation by telephone: „I want to activate the software by telephone“, take a photo of the Installation ID and send it to us at info@litsenzi.bg. We will send back the confirmation code.
Telephone activation exists precisely for this case — a hardware change with a valid licence. It is not a way around anything.
If you have an OEM licence
The licence stays with the old motherboard. There is no setting that will move it — that is how it was designed. The new machine needs a new licence, and here it makes sense to take a Retail one, so the same thing does not happen again at your next upgrade.
An exception: if the motherboard was replaced under warranty, with the same model, Microsoft sometimes accepts the replacement. It is worth trying through telephone activation, but do not count on it.
How to spare yourself the problem next time
- Link the licence to a Microsoft account straight after activation. The hardware-change wizard then works.
- Keep the email with the key and the invoice. The invoice is the document that proves acquisition — and in a software audit it is the invoice that is asked for, not the key.
- When buying a new computer, check what licence comes with it. If it is OEM, be aware that it stays with that machine.
