Reinstalling Windows 11 without losing activation
Shari
You want to reset or reinstall Windows 11 and are worried about losing your licence. In most cases activation comes back on its own and free of charge, because Microsoft keeps it linked to the computer's hardware; you only need a new licence if you replaced the motherboard and your licence cannot be transferred, or if the system was never activated with a valid key.
How Windows 11 “remembers” activation
When Windows is activated, Microsoft registers the hardware of that particular computer, above all the motherboard. Often the result is a digital licence (Microsoft also calls it a digital entitlement) – an activation method that does not require you to enter a product key. If your computer has a digital licence, you can reinstall the same edition of Windows 11 on the same computer without a key and the system will activate automatically online.
Check where you stand: Settings → System → Activation, row Activation state. You will see one of these messages:
- “Windows is activated” or “Windows is activated with a digital license” – the system is activated;
- “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account” – the most convenient option, because the licence is also linked to your account;
- “Windows is not activated” – reinstalling will not fix anything; first find out why the system is not activated.
Preparing before you reinstall
- Link the licence to a Microsoft account. If you sign in with a local account, open Settings → Accounts → Your info and switch to signing in with a Microsoft account. The Activation screen should then show that the licence is linked to your account. This link matters most if you change hardware later.
- Keep your product key. If you activated with a key, keep the email containing it and the invoice. If you do not know where the key is, see how to find your product key.
- Note the exact edition. Home or Pro – it is shown at the top of the same screen. You will need it for a clean installation.
- Back up your files to an external drive, a USB stick or OneDrive. If the drive is encrypted with BitLocker or Device encryption, write down the recovery key.
Option 1: Reset this PC (the easiest)
No USB stick and no ISO file. Open Settings → System → Recovery and next to Reset this PC select the Reset PC button. You will see two choices:
- Keep my files – Windows is reinstalled; your personal documents, photos and other files stay, but installed programs and settings are removed.
- Remove everything – files, programs and settings are deleted. This suits you if you are selling or giving away the PC, or want a truly clean start.
Windows then asks where to get the system files from. Cloud download fetches a fresh copy with the latest updates. Local reinstall uses the files already on the PC – it is quicker on a slow connection but may not include the newest updates.
A reset reinstalls the same edition of Windows, so activation is usually restored on its own once the PC connects to the internet. You will need to reinstall your programs, including Office.
Option 2: clean installation from USB
If the system will not start, or you also want to wipe the drive's partitions, you do a clean installation from USB. How to prepare the stick and how the installation itself goes is covered in our article on installing Windows 11 from USB. For activation, three things matter:
- On the product key screen choose I don't have a product key. Activation will be checked after installation.
- When Setup asks for the edition, choose the same edition you had before. The edition must match the licence: if the licence is for Pro and you install Home (or the other way round), Windows will not activate.
- During first-time setup, Windows 11 Home and Pro require an internet connection and a Microsoft account. Sign in with the same account the licence is linked to. If you prefer a local account, you can add one afterwards under Settings → Accounts.
After the first sign-in, check Settings → System → Activation. Activation usually happens automatically within minutes. If you originally activated with a product key and this does not happen, enter the same key via Change product key.
A note on laptops that came with Windows 11 Home and were later upgraded to Pro: the Home key is often stored in the motherboard firmware and Setup may use it on its own, without offering a choice of edition. If you end up with Home after installation, enter your Pro key again via Change product key – the upgrade does not require another installation.
If activation does not come back on its own
Most causes can be fixed free of charge:
- Different edition. You installed Home but the licence is for Pro, or vice versa. Reinstall the correct edition or change the edition with a key.
- No connection to Microsoft's servers. No internet, a corporate firewall or a proxy can stop activation. Try a different network.
- Replaced motherboard. To Windows this often means a “new” computer. If the licence is linked to a Microsoft account, open Activation, select Troubleshoot and choose I changed hardware on this device recently. You must be signed in as an administrator with the same account the licence is linked to. Whether activation on the new hardware succeeds depends on the type of licence – details are in our article on how to transfer a Windows 11 licence.
For specific error codes and how to fix them, see our article on Windows activation errors.
In two cases, however, no setting helps and you need a new licence:
- The licence was OEM and stayed with the old motherboard. OEM licences cannot be transferred to other hardware.
- The previous activation was not genuine. If the system was “activated” with an unofficial tool, that activation disappears after reinstalling. We explained why such tools are risky in our article on the risks of KMS activators.
You do not need another installation: enter the new key under Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. A Pro key also activates an installed Home by upgrading it to Pro.
Summary: when you need a new licence
A normal reset or reinstall on the same computer does not require a new licence. You need one if you are building a new PC, if activation cannot be restored after a hardware change, or if the system never had a valid licence.
