Upgrading Windows 11 Home to Pro with a product key
Shari
You bought a laptop with Windows 11 Home and suddenly you need BitLocker, remote access to your office PC or the ability to join the company domain. The good news is that you do not have to reinstall the system. Upgrading from Home to Pro is done straight from Settings with a product key, and after a restart you are working in the same system, just with the extra features unlocked.
Before you start: three quick checks
- Home must be activated. Microsoft states that the upgrade steps apply to devices running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home. Check under Start → Settings → System → Activation: the edition is shown at the top, with the Activation state row below it. If it says "Windows is not activated", sort that out first.
- You need an internet connection. The key is checked and activated through Microsoft's servers.
- Make a backup. The upgrade normally leaves your files and programs alone, but any system change is a good reason to copy important documents to OneDrive or an external drive.
If you are not sure where your current installation came from, see how to check whether Windows is genuine.
Step by step: upgrading with a product key
- Open Settings → System → Activation. Shortcut: press
Win + R, typems-settings:activationand press Enter. - Find the Change product key row and select the Change button next to it.
- If a User Account Control prompt appears, confirm with Yes. Administrator rights are required.
- Enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro key (format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) and select Next.
- Confirm that you want to start the upgrade. Windows prepares the change and restarts the PC, sometimes more than once. Do not switch off the power during this time, and keep a laptop plugged in.
- After the restart, open Activation again. It should show Windows 11 Pro with the state "Windows is activated".
If you do not have a key, the same screen has an Upgrade your edition of Windows section with a button to the Microsoft Store. That is the other official route, where you buy the upgrade directly from Microsoft. With a product key the process is the same, you simply enter the code yourself.
What is kept and what changes
Upgrading from Home to Pro is not a reinstallation. Only the edition of the running system changes, so:
- your personal files, installed programs and most settings stay where they are;
- user accounts, including your Microsoft account, are unchanged;
- the Windows version (for example 24H2) stays the same; only the edition changes.
There is one important limitation: going back from Pro to Home by changing the key is not supported. If you ever want Home again, that means a clean installation. So decide beforehand whether you really need Pro.
What Pro actually adds
A detailed comparison of the two editions is in our article Windows 11 Pro or Home. Here are just the features people most often upgrade for:
- BitLocker – full encryption of the system drive and external drives, with control over which drive is encrypted and how. Home only has the simplified Device encryption, and not on every device.
- Remote Desktop as a host – to connect to the PC from elsewhere, it must run Pro. You turn it on under Settings → System → Remote Desktop. From Home you can connect to other machines, but you cannot accept connections.
- Group Policy Editor (
gpedit.msc) – central settings for updates, security, USB devices and much more. - Hyper-V – built-in virtual machines for testing, older software or training. This role cannot be installed on Windows 11 Home.
- Joining a domain or Microsoft Entra ID – needed if your organisation manages its computers centrally, for example with Active Directory or Intune.
Common errors and how to fix them
Most upgrade problems come from a mistyped key or from the state of the system. The most common codes are:
- 0xC004F050 – the key you entered cannot be used to activate Windows. Usually a character has been mistyped (8 and B, 0 and O mixed up) or the key is for another product, such as Office. Copy the key straight from the email rather than typing it by hand.
- 0xC004F034 – the key is invalid or is for a different edition of Windows.
- 0x8007007B – an Enterprise edition key has been entered on Home or Pro. Such a key will not work for this upgrade.
- 0x803FA067 – the key you entered cannot upgrade or activate this edition: it is not a Pro key, or Microsoft does not accept it as valid. Entering it again will not help – you need a valid Windows 11 Pro key.
- 0xC004FC03 – there is no internet connection or a firewall is blocking activation. Check the network, your VPN and your antivirus settings, then try again.
If after the restart the system is already Pro but says "Windows is not activated", wait a few minutes with the internet connected and select Troubleshoot on the Activation screen. More codes and fixes are in our article on Windows activation errors.
When you do not need the upgrade
Pro does not make your PC faster and does not improve gaming. If you use it for browsing, Office, films, games and homework, Home is perfectly adequate. You also do not need to upgrade if:
- you only want to encrypt the drive and the device supports Device encryption – check under Settings → Privacy & security;
- you connect to another computer, rather than others connecting to yours – the Remote Desktop client works on Home too;
- Windows is not activated at all – then you first need to activate Home, not change the edition;
- the only reason is "just in case" – you can upgrade at any time, once you actually need one of the features.
